Cemetery Organization

Purpose

The purpose of the cemetery is to privately serve the needs of communicants of Immanuel Episcopal Church. The cemetery is divided into three sections. In addition, there is a newly added Resurrection Garden for scattering of ashes, which is located outside the cemetery. Please see our Rector for information. The three cemetery sections are named for the lovely trees beautifying the grounds: Maple, Dogwood, and Holly.

Organization

  • The older section is Maple and comprises lots 1 - 109.

    • There are no graves available in Maple for purchase.

  • The Dogwood section comprises lots 210 - 248 and has a limited number of graves available for purchase.

  • All graves in the Maple and Dogwood sections can be used for full casket burials and/or cremation ashes.

  • Holly is our newest section and currently offers dedicated graves for cremation ashes only. Lot 250 will hold up to two (2) urns.

Monuments

All monuments must be pre-approved by the Cemetery Committee prior to installation. All new footstones must be flat and level with the ground. The Holly section is limited to flat stones or bronze monuments level with the ground. All grave owners are responsible for theongoing maintenance of their monuments.

Availability

To preserve the limited availability of graves for future generations, a family is limited to the purchase of no more than four (4) graves. Please contact the church office for prices and availability.

Burials

To plan for a burial, the family should first contact the church. All burials, services, and dates must be pre-approved by the Rector. Once approved, the family will contact H & W Tracey Company with the burial date to prepare the grave site. All burials must be professionally excavated. All full burials must include a concrete grave liner or burial vault. A one-time maintenance fee is charged by the church at the time of burial and collected by Tracey & Company. The family is responsible for compensating the Rector and Music Director.

All donations to the church and cemetery are much appreciated.

Cemetery History

The history of Immanuel Church in Glencoe dates from 1871, when the cornerstone for the church building was laid. The Rev. R. R. Mason officiated. In two years, the building was completed. The church was consecrated in 1873. More than a decade passed before final plans were made for a cemetery. In 1885, the cemetery was officially established when Mr. Edward Austen and Mrs. John S. McCulloch deeded one acre of land to the church.

The original acre of cemetery land has been added to over the years. In 1928, additional strips of land were donated to remain forever as woodland. This buffer protects two sides of the cemetery boundary. In 1950, Mr. Joseph Mowell and Mrs. A. E. Sharp donated more than four acres of land.

The Immanuel Church Cemetery boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in Baltimore County. McCulloch Brown donated the lovely wrought iron fence in 1932. In 1987, The Women of Immanuel placed a memorial bench near the cemetery entrance. From this vantage, a peaceful view of the idyllic landscape can be enjoyed.
